Paragraph #1 -- Basic Downshifting

We'll actually write the paragraph in class on Wednesday, January 18, so you need only bring detailed notes to class. In the meantime, observe your environment. Look around. Take some notes.

Define and describe a problem here at Ohio Wesleyan. Start with a topic sentence that defines the problem. Then describe the problem in more detail in subsequent sentences. Finally, give a detailed example of the problem. Use the details to illuminate the description above.

Write a well developed paragraph that follows the basic downshifting pattern we will discuss in class. Sometime over the weekend, post your paragraph to the blog as a "comment" to this assignment. Also, BRING THE PARAGRAPH TO CLASS on Friday so we can spend some time in class editing it.

We will follow that basic pattern on all the paragraphs you write during the first weeks on the semester:

Day 1: Draft the paragraph. Blog it ASAP.

Next class day: Edit the previous paragraph and draft a the next one.

  2. Construction on a college campus can be difficult for the students and faculty to deal with. When construction is taking place, the students and faculty have to change their walking routes. Currently at OWU, the fountain being built has disabled many students. Last semester when you wanted to go from Hamilton Williams Campus Center to the library, it was easy to walk across the JAY Walk. Now there is a construction site impairing that walk causing you to have to walk around. The noise the workers make is also a distraction to those trying to get work done. Because the site is right outside the library, the noise made is easily heard inside, and when trying to focus on studying the loud noises can be very distracting. The mess that the construction makes is also a big pain. I know a lot of people that care very deeply for their shoes and how they look, and when there is mud every where you walk on the JAY Walk, it becomes very easy to get those nice looking shoes dirty.

  3. The size of the dining hall in the Hamilton Williams Campus Center is well-known problem at Ohio Wesleyan University. Then extent of its space is most prominent in the middle of the day, when students are packed in like sardines. At this time, everyone tends to convene in Hamilton Williams or on the JAYWalk, because they are located in the center of campus. This leads to an influx of people into the kitchen and dining areas of the campus center, where many are hoping to grab some lunch before their next class. Because these students are often in a hurry, the inconveniently small size is the cause of much frustration and wasted time. When I visited the school last year, at first my mother and I did not feel welcome. While trying to purchase our lunch at Hamilton Williams, we were both pushed and shoved by students. Now I understand why. At lunch time in Hamilton Williams, it is every man for himself. Everyone is hungry, and almost everyone has a class to get to. Unfortunately, there is simply not enough room to accommodate every student who wants to eat a quick lunch in the center of campus in the middle of the day.

  4. On most college campuses students are known to complain about everyday problems and Ohio Wesleyan is no exception. Here at Ohio Wesleyan I feel that the problem is the internet connectivity when it occasionally lacks in speed. In the evenings when everyone is online working on homework or relaxing, the loading time becomes almost unbearable. For example, when I was working on chemistry homework online an assignment that should have taken only twenty minutes took almost an hour to complete with loading time included. Another example of a failed attempt for homework to load happened to my suite-mate. While she was downloading a few documents for her class the download speed was 0.1 KB/second, her computer told her it would be “... a long time left. Grab a snickers.”

  5. On the Ohio Wesleyan campus there is a devastating lack of opportunity for sober social interaction on the weekends. With a great number of students choosing to participate in activities involving alcohol, the attendance of extra-curricular activities has dropped. For example Band Concert attendance on non-school nights is at an all-time low. Students are choosing to spend their time at bars, fraternity parties, and other social situations where alcohol is present.

  6. Ohio Wesleyan University is a great school and as such I could only find a small but important problem, the walkways, which are essential for going to classes, can cause problems. One obstruction is the puddles large and small that appear all over campus whenever it rains. The biggest and the muddiest puddles, or shall I say mini-lakes, often end up near the science center and are basically unavoidable. On my way to classes, I end up getting wet in the process which leaves my feet cold and legs damp from the annoying puddles and excess rain water that refuses to drain. Another issue is cracks and various lips on the sidewalks that I trip on occasionally. The cracked and uneven sidewalks sometimes cause me to trip if I am not looking at exactly where my feet are going, especially alongside the SLU houses. This is another annoyance and potentially a face plant waiting to happen if I am not careful and do not pay attention to where I am walking. But the biggest concern I have is with the icy sidewalks in the cold mornings. The stairs tips are covered with ice and thin layers of slippery ice cover major sidewalks like the ones near Thomson and Welch dorms. The ice is very slippery and to avoid falling, I take very small steps, although I am careful, the ice is potentially hazardous and certainly difficult to walk on.

  7. Occasionally the dining hours at Ohio Wesleyan can make it difficult for some students to plan a comfortable dining schedule. Hamilton Williams CafĂ©, for instance, opens at 7:30 which can lead to those students with an 8 o’clock class ravaging their food in a frantic rush. Also, student athletes often must hurry if they wish to have a wonderful Smith supper. Many sports conclude practice at 6 o’clock and unfortunately Smith sometimes stops making food shortly thereafter. This causes athletes, like many other busy students, to often be forced into the monotony of Welch pizza and subs or else be left to scrounge from the leftovers.

  8. One of my least favorite things in the world is apathetic, lifeless quiet. I hate it when an environment lacks bustle and when people lack enthusiasm. That being said, one of the biggest problems with Ohio Wesleyan University, in my opinion, is that the campus takes an enthusiasm for life away from the students. As a result of this I see silence and indifference often, too often. I see this indifference when I wake up in the morning and I see people walk along the JayWalk, slowly and boringly, seemingly disinterested in the learning that awaits them. Later in the day, I go to class and, more often than not, it is filled with awkward silence in between the teacher’s questions and lecture. And on the weekend I walk out of my dorm hall to go to Smith for meals and I hardly ever see anybody that looks to be ecstatic with life or excited by the possibilities of the weekend. All of this being said, it is my opinion that the school should try to eradicate this apathy and suffocating silence that I have come to see on a daily basis. I do not believe that this indifference that the school is causing is healthy for the students or the campus and that it is in the administration’s best interests to search for a solution to the problem and to inject vigor, life and enthusiasm into the daily lives of the students.

  9. A problem on the OWU Campus that many students are effected by is the lack in quality of the Wi-Fi in the Smith dorm. Watching videos online is rarely a success. It is very frustrating trying to watch a video on YouTube because the video glitches every few seconds and has to reload again since there is a bad internet connection. Also, trying to download documents offline is difficult and takes a very long time. Many classes require students to download PowerPoints, worksheets, or study guides off of Blackboard or other websites, but the internet is so bad that it will sometimes not allow them to download. The only option is then to go to the library just to download them and then walk right back to your dorm.

  10. Although Ohio Wesleyan is a relatively small university, the issue of not being able to make it on time from one class to another exists. Getting from the academic side of campus to the music department area is a hassle and insures tardiness to every class. The "Sanborn Sprint" as non-music majors and music majors alike call it, is the act of running, power-walking, or whatever it takes to make it to Sanborn in ten minutes from beyond Sandusky Street. For example, the German class I attend lets out at two, and I have to make it to Sanborn by two ten. It takes the average person ten minutes to walk across campus without getting stuck at traffic lights. No matter how fast I seem to walk, it always takes fifteen minutes to make it to Sanborn.

  11. Choosing where to live at OWU is very difficult. The most desirable option is often the hardest to obtain: off-campus housing. OWU is shifting from an all residence campus, shrinking the availability of students to live off campus. In the upcoming year, only students who live in Delaware County, as well as students with medicals reasons, are approved to live off campus. Students scramble more and more each year to develop an excuse that will grant them off campus housing in the upcoming year. This frequently turns into students creating reasons that were not previously present. For example, students may find a relative that lives in Delaware County and claim residency there; but later, find a house near campus to reside at with friends.

  12. A matter I consider to be a problem at Ohio Wesleyan is whether or not to call parents of current students to ask for donations for the Ohio Wesleyan Fund. This is an important issue because some parents gladly contribute to the Ohio Wesleyan fund (even after paying tuition) and these help for new construction projects, scholarships, etc. However, some parents feel that it is ridiculous to ask them for a donation because they are already struggling to meet tuition bills. For instance, once I called a parent of a current student (I work at the Ohio Wesleyan Fund). After some bonding about how pleasant college life is, I asked them to make a commitment to the Ohio Wesleyan Fund. They responded with asking me if paying $48,000 a year was not enough of a commitment. Another time, the parent was very enthusiastic about hearing from Ohio Wesleyan University. The parent was glad to donate to help make future projects possible and to generate more funds that will help students pay for college.

  13. Ohio Wesleyan is generally considered an excellent school, one with elegance and poise. But year after year, class sizes shrink, students flunk out, and budgets are cut. From last year on a visit, my tour guide is no longer at the school. Even that one person can make a difference in an academic environment. The current senior class start with a class size of 500, and is not down to 400 (I made this up). These people are not just figures and numbers, they are part of a university that needs them to thrive!

  14. The showers in the residence halls of Ohio Wesleyan University are a major problem and a source of distress for many students. The showers have curtains that are too small, hair in the drain almost every night, a lack of hot water periodically, and showerheads that only operate at an extremely low pressure. The shower curtains are not long enough to cover the width of the shower and therefore there is a cold draft and an overall lack of privacy. The hair clogging and circling the drain is disgusting and it also does not allow the water from the shower to drain properly. The showers are also a problem because they are unpredictable; hot water appears to only be available a few nights a week. Lastly, the showerheads are extremely low in pressure and because of this it takes a very long time for most students to rinse their hair and body.

  15. Food services on a college campus can make or break a students college life. At Ohio Wesleyan University the food is below average, making life rough. The food is prepared with poor quality ingredients that do not compare to a home cooked meal. With such unhealthy food it is hard for students to obtain all of the necessary nutrients they need to learn and grow. I even resort to skipping some meals because the food has become unbearable. Students should not have to worry about how their food is going to taste, they have enough on their minds.

  18. The buildings all look new but the inside of them doesn’t have any new technology. Most of the classrooms have blackboards that are harder to read than white boards. The dorm housings could be more comfortable. The water fountains don't work well and are even loud at times. The elevator doesn’t go faster than walking up the stairs, if it’s working that day. The self-kitchens don’t have a good oven and the cafeterias don’t have any soft serve machines. The dorms could use more cable channels or even a stronger internet.
