Your Greatest Strength as a Writer

Your last blog entry:

Describe your greatest strength as a writer. Don't forget to downshift. You might want to give examples from your writing in this class or others.

Also, reflect on how you can build on that strength. In other words, how can you use that strength to develop other skills you are weak in.

Please attempt to post this entry by 6 PM on Tuesday.

  1. My greatest strength as a writer is my vocabulary and my ability to come up with streams of ideas that flow quickly from one idea to another idea and as such I am never too short on a page requirement. I often write overly fancy sentences but I usually have a good grasp on the nuances of words that I am able to use transitions well. For instance, in my fast food essay I use two transitions one is furthermore and the other is the repetition of the word argues from the previous sentence, thus both help the reader follow along with my ideas, “Furthermore, he argues it is difficult to find healthy food… .” I also use delightfully descriptive language because when writing I try to spice up my sentences and stop it from becoming just another boring sentence in a long stack of papers. For example, in a paragraph about the Romeo and Juliet Cartoon from They Say I Say, I use the word landmine to add a bit of uniqueness to my paragraph instead I of saying something bland I write, “Another potential landmine is not getting across your point completely… .” Although I cannot give an easy quote of just how many ideas occur throughout my papers I know there are many. The best example is often I find myself having to delete sentences and separate my ideas in different paragraphs because I have written too much. But through the revising process I am able to pick the best ideas and add better support to them by deleting unnecessary repetitions or ideas that do not fit with my thesis. Overall the best parts of my writing are the varied use of words and the many ideas that I am able to come up with for the topic.

  2. I feel that my strength as a writer is my ability to write precise and articulate sentences. In my past writing and blog assignments I have tried to fit all my ideas into concise sentences that are easy to read and understand. For example, my points that I made throughout the assignments were usually found in the opening sentence and were written very straightforward. A specific example is from one paragraph from the Romeo and Juliet cartoon, “The cartoonist claims through this cartoon that my generation has no work ethic, but I challenge this opinion.” In this sentence, like others I have written, the idea a plainly stated and easy to understand. Being able to write concise sentences will help me with my ability to organize the structure of my essays. Writing precise sentences will make it easier for me to organize my ideas and make it easier for others to follow my train of thought. The one problem I see with writing concisely is that I am constantly having to add extra bulk to my papers to make the paper long enough.

  3. I think my greatest strength as a writer is my ability to make interesting observations about interesting topics. Also, I think that I present these ideas in an articulate way. This bolsters my writing by making it attractive to the reader and unique. For example, I believe my online schooling topic for the research paper is intriguing and relevant. Many students and teacher wonder what are the best educational system and methods. My topic will uncover the benefits of this different educational style. These good ideas could also help counter my procrastination. If I simple brainstorm and get my ideas early, I could make an outline of my ideas. This outline would help me get started, which is my weakness in writing and the source of my procrastination. Furthermore, my ability to formulate many ideas should make an initial draft easy to write. I need to trust my ideas, save the editing for later, and draft early in order to fully use my strength.

  4. My greatest strength as a writer is my ability to find evidence to support my arguments. I also try to think of all the counterarguments to my position so that I can find evidence against them. For example in the fast food essay I did outside research to support my arguments. I also tried to think of the opposing arguments to everything I was stating and think of ways that I could prove them wrong. I believe this has always been one of my strengths, but I never really noticed it until I attended lecture by the authors of They say, I say. I will continue to utilize this strength in my upcoming paper.

  5. In my opinion, my greatest strength as a writer is the way I write simple and to the point. I stay on topic and do not go on rants with unrelated information just to increase the length of my paper. Writing only about relevant information avoids wasting my time as well as the reader’s time. Another benefit is that my writing is easy to follow. I do not distract the reader with flashy language that may confuse them on what I am talking about or what position I hold in an argument. This skill will be helpful when writing my research paper since it requires writing six pages to prove a point. Getting off topic is easy to do when writing a lengthy paper but the reader will always know what I am trying to prove.

  6. My greatest strength as a writer is my ability to edit and revise. I am very good at taking a piece of writing and completely changing it for the better. When i first wrote my fast food essay, it was a complete mess. I was able to revise it to be clear and to the point with sufficient evidence. Although my first drafts are very unorganized, I can take that kind of writing and turn it around completely. I am very familiar with the rules of grammar, which makes editing a whole lot easier. Because I enjoy editing and revising, I do so for all of my friends. This enhancing my skills as an editor, making my strength grow.

  7. I have a few strengths as a writer. but I will have to admit my biggest strength is the amount of time I spend on a writing project. I particularly spend a lot of time on planning my piece. Planning involves deciding how I am going to organize my essay, how I am going to deliver it, and recognizing the expectations of the reader. For example, while writing the 'Fast Food' essay, I acknowledged that one of things I need to do is to make sure my professor doesn't fall asleep at 3 in the morning by adding subtle humor and personal examples; other than the typical responsibilities of writing an essay.
I take the notion 'writing is a process' extremely seriously, because it takes time to reach a destination as far as a paper is concerned. My next strength is the fashion in which I preserve my drafts. I keep them extremely organized by creating a new version for every few changes I make. All my essays, paragraphs and assignments have a few version. This enables me to see the difference between the first draft and the final draft Seeing that difference strengthens my resolve to spend time writing and taking one step at a time.

  8. My greatest strength as a writer is adaptability. I believe I have the ability to write in a variety of voices and that I can adapt to the style of paper very easily. Some papers require a certain voice and other papers may require an entirely different voice. At the end of the day I believe I can be like a chameleon and be a writer that has a variety of writing styles. In my opinion, there is nothing more boring than a writer who always writes with the same, predictable style. I do my best to avoid this boringness by writing in a variety of different voices and styles.

  9. My greatest strength as a writer is my ability to handle arguments, whether it be creating my own argument, or to pick apart an opposition. In general this helps me to produce a great thesis that slowly degenerates as the paper goes. In the they say I say paragraphs I was able to use my keen analytical skills to break down what the author was saying then form a reasonable, and intuitive thesis. I think the best way for me to build on this strength would involve becoming more consistent in my writing. For example in many papers ill start off strong with a good argument, and as the paper drags on the quality of my arguments begin to dwindle. What I would like to do ideally is take the fervor I put into constructing and argument, and keep that momentum going through the rest of my paper. This would require me to fix my greatest strength being starting earlier. So that I can have all that energy every time I start a new paragraph.

  10. My greatest strength as a writer is sentence structure. Firstly, my sentences never start with the same word or phrase. The reader pays more attention if sentences are interesting, and that means using compound sentences, figurative language, and an appropriate tone. I avoid using expletives and wordy sentences with that and redundant word. For instance, I write concisely and prudently to enunciate a point.

  11. My greatest strength as a writer tends to be articulation. Most of the time, I am good at manipulating language to get my point across. In fact, articulation and syntax are probably my favorite parts of the writing process. While I do not much enjoy gathering information and finding something to say about it, I really enjoy figuring out creative and beautiful ways in which to say it, and I think that shows in many of my papers. Most of the time, I get writing assignments back with comments like "Good articulation!" and "Beautifully Written!" The best way to improve this strength would be to work on my greatest weakness, procrastination. If I have more time to work on a paper, I will be able to more carefully consider which words to choose, and in what order to put them.

  12. My greatest strengths as a writer are coherent ideas and articulate sentences. Although sometimes my ideas will lose their focus, a quick edit typically fixes the problem. The ideas are typically concise and to the point. The articulate sentences make my writing sound halfway intelligent, while providing the reader with the easiest sentence to read and process while conveying the idea. Adding voice and strength to my work is done by thinly veiling my opinion on the subjects, not so much that I try to change the readers mind, but more so to give the reader a different perspective of a topic. These characteristics of my writing make my writing mine.

  14. My greatest strength as a writer is my ability to write as I stay on topic. I organize my pieces with headings and transitions to help them flow for the reader. I have no problem performing research to add credibility to any given content. I am also able to write in a variety of formats, including overviews, how-to articles and lists.

  15. Mine is coming up with a good story. After that it's being able to make really good descriptions that can be seen in the mind clearly. Oh and when I'm on a roll can crank out 3k plus words quickly. Weather people will be able tor read it is another matter, (messy.) My faults are grammar, typos (dyslexic) and punctuation. I clean those up as best I can and my editor fixes the rest. <3 (By then it's 99% misplaced commas.) Yay for ginger and grammerly.
